Americana o Francesa? - Americana lock or French lock?

The "shoulder lock" is a technique used as a method of upper body restraint. The application is executed by applying pressure between the radial bone and shoulder.

The "Americana" (BJJ) is also known as "Top Wrist Lock" (Catch), or "Ude-Garami" (Judo).

The "Kimura" is also known as "Double Wrist Lock" (Catch), "Gyaku Ude-Garami" (Judo). The application is similar to the americana, except that it is reversed.

the Gracies weren't "good" at Ude Garami and never really used it much in their system and that's why they gave him the name "Kimura" after the famous Judokas applied it against Helio. One wonders why a Kodokan Judo basic technique was not used by the Gracie...did they ignore it?

But there is a term that few know and it is "Francesa" or "French armlock" though even in France the technique was called Americana In Greek Roman manuals. In Brazil, the term Francesa was used as a synonym for American. Why was called Francesa remains a mystery.

Both Carlson Gracie Jr.and Oswaldo Alves used the term to indicate the americana lock. Some say, jokingly, that Carlos Jr avoided calling it Americana in his series because the Brazilians call this technique Americana because it bent the arm of the opponent into a position as a gay bent his arm like an "American faggot".
